My wife and I travelled by coach from London to Scotland in July 2021. Our first stop was at a service station for breakfast. The next stop, the first in Scotland was Gretna Green. While approaching Gretna Green, a coach carrying a bride was also travelling towards Gretna Green, giving an opportunity to witness a wedding ceremony at this special place.

Gretna Green is of historical importance, most famous for weddings. It’s situated on the Scottish side of the borders of Scotland & England. In 18th century marriages under the ages of 21 were not allowed in England & Wales. Scottish law allowed for ”irregular marriages”, meaning that if a declaration was made before two witnesses, almost anybody had the authority to conduct the marriage ceremony. The blacksmiths in Gretna became known as ”anvil priests”, culminating with Richard Rennison, last anvil priest, who performed 5,147 ceremonies.

After lunch in Grena Green, we proceeded towards Glasgow city & visited few places before finally arriving at the hotel.
