This is by far the most well-known attraction in Yucatan, and perhaps in the whole country. It is a huge complex of Mayan ruins, once an ancient city featuring step pyramids, temples, and other stone structures, and was built by the Mayan people approximately 1200 years ago.

It is a site where myth and reality, legend and history all coincide. In a survey in 2007, millions of people around the world voted Chichen Itza as one of the Seven New Wonders of the World. In 1988, Chichen Itza was named a UNESCO world heritage site.
