Day 23

Continuing our way south, we entered the Lemaire channel in the morning. The spectacular steep mountain sides of black rocks stood in perfect contrast to the white snow, as we sailed through this narrow passage. It can ice up, and quickly, blocking southbound ships even in summer, so it’s not always possible to get through but the place is wonderfully calm. The Lemaire Channel is well known as one of the most photogenic straits in Antarctica, nicknamed ‘’Kodak

gap’’. Giant glaciers tower over the channel and occasionally drop loads of ice that crash into the crystal-clear waters below. We just hung there for hours and hours enjoying the silence and peace. Photos don’t do it justice. During the summer, it becomes a key feeding site for humpback whales. Truly one of the most beautiful places in the world. With perfect conditions and outstanding scenery, we went small boat cruising in the afternoon, and spotted penguins, shags, crab-eater seals and even a leopard seal. We also enjoyed the most wonderful sunset as we headed towards Drake Passage.
